Does schema markup help you appear in AI search?

By Joel Maldonado · Last reviewed 12 October 2026

Schema markup helps search engines and AI systems understand who a business is, but on its own it doesn't get you recommended. In our studies, AI answers mostly cited third-party directories, booking platforms and review sites, so being listed accurately there matters more.

What Google says

Google's guidance for its AI features, including AI Overviews, is that there are no special requirements beyond normal SEO best practice. Structured data is useful when it matches the visible content, but no special markup is needed to appear.

What the AI answers actually cite

NRLC.ai asked AI assistants hundreds of real customer questions in October 2026 and recorded every source cited:

Market What dominated the citations
Singapore tuition centres (ChatGPT, 95 questions) 93% of answers cited at least one of three directories
Dubai aesthetic clinics (Perplexity, 150 questions) 61% cited one booking platform; 91% cited a booking site or directory
California HVAC (Perplexity, 150 questions) 76% cited lead-gen or review sites

The businesses that were recommended most were the ones listed consistently on those third-party sites, and whose own pages answered the customer's question with specifics such as prices, areas served and services.

Where schema still helps

Think of schema as making true facts easy to read, not as a ranking trick. For the full source breakdown by market, see which sources AI cites for local businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT use schema markup?
AI assistants with web search read pages and the sources they retrieve. Schema can help them interpret a page, but our study data shows recommendations are driven mostly by third-party listings and the content itself.
Do I need special markup for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says AI features have no additional requirements beyond standard SEO best practices.
