Why review stars don't show for your business

By Joel Maldonado · Last reviewed 12 October 2026

Google does not show star ratings for reviews a business publishes about itself. If your LocalBusiness or Organization markup includes reviews or an aggregate rating that you control, including reviews pulled in by a third-party widget, those stars are not eligible.

The rule

In September 2019 Google stopped showing review rich results for what it calls self-serving reviews: reviews of a LocalBusiness or Organization (and their subtypes) shown on that business's own site. Google said this applies whether the reviews are added directly or through an embedded third-party widget.

Frequently asked questions

Can I show review stars for my own business in Google?
Not from markup on your own site. Since 2019 Google treats reviews a LocalBusiness or Organization shows about itself as self-serving and does not display stars for them.
Does a third-party review widget get around the rule?
No. Google said the rule applies whether reviews are added directly or through an embedded third-party widget.
Is self-serving review markup penalised?
It is ignored for stars. Markup that misrepresents reviews can still violate Google's structured data policies, so keep it accurate or remove it.
